All limitations of the player are due to inherent hardware limitations of the MediaTek MT8555 chipset that we are using in the BDP-10x series of players. This chipset is responsible for all the functionality of the player, from the front-end ability to read DVD-Audio and SACD media to the back-end DSP processing of Dolby Digital TrueHD and DTS-HD Master.
This is the only Silicon on Chip (SoC) on the market which supports both DVD-Audio and SACD, so in order to retain one of our key selling points, universal disc media support, we are forced to rely completely on the MediaTek SoC platform for our continuing line of products.
The latest MT8555 has some integration issues which prevent some solutions from working to their fullest potential. The chipset design does not have the pin-out required to send SACD DSD over both the HDMI 1 and HDMI 2 interfaces, so we were forced to only allow SACD DSD to be passed over HDMI 2. HDMI 2 is the best output to transmit SACD DSD as many customers who will be using a Split Audio/Video configuration will be doing so with HDMI 1 going to a newer television and HDMI 2 going to an older receiver. In this configuration HDMI 1 would be video only and HDMI 2 would be audio only, so the best solution for acquiring all the audio characteristics of the player would be HDMI 2.
The HDMI inputs also present their own problems, with the DSP characteristics of these inputs not being able to accept Bit Stream Dolby Digital TrueHD or DTS-HD Master. The player, however, can still accept high resolution, 24-bit/192KHz (6-Channel) or 24-bit/96KHz (8-Channel) PCM through both the HDMI Front and HDMI Rear Inputs. So although we can't accept the Bit Stream of high resolution audio, we can accept the PCM equivalent without any issues.
